Bob Dylan To Perform On Grammies Tonight. Bieber Combs Hair.

Readers and Music Lovers (we hope they are not exclusive of each other),  we felt you should know that the legendary Bob Dylan will perform at the Grammy Awards tonight.  He will be 70 years old in May and has won ten Grammys so far, most recent in memory was the ‘Best Rock Vocal’ Award for a version of his song Cold Irons Bound.

We got to see Jack Nicholson give Dylan his ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award and were treated to a little speech, which rambled comically but he also played a poignant (today) song from his catalogue,  Masters of War.

This is what he said in his acceptance speech in 1991…

Well, my daddy, he didn’t leave me much – you know he was a very simple man, and he didn’t leave me a lot – but what he did tell me was this. He did say, son, he said…he said so many things, you know…. He say, you know it’s possible to become so defiled in this world that your own mother and father will abandon you, and if that happens, God will always believe in your own ability to mend your own ways.
Now, you may find that rambling, and it IS, to a degree but the message is right on and is very good advice for life.  Many people look to Dylan for advice in his songs, a practice he laughs off, generally.
Tonight, he will be backed by Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers in a special salute to acoustic music.  Yesterday, they rehearsed Dylan’s Maggie’s Farm.  This is a typical Dylan irony, in that the song is the same song which got him his first major boos and disapproval of his act, when he performed it with an electric guitar and backed by a rock band, The Band, at the Newport Folk Festival, all those years ago.
We wanted to inform you of the show so you could watch tonight.  It is always a treat to see Bob Dylan in a live appearance, although some people enjoy complaining about it.  To read more about that, see my essay, Romance and the Rolling Stone, in the recently-released new Issue Eight of Beatdom, the Beat Journal, available at
